Granville—(September 7, 2023) Kitchen Table Restaurants opened its hotly anticipated retro burger joint (their twelfth restaurant) called Monzo Burger (a spin on the word "Manzo"—Italian for "beef") located on the ground floor of the Vancouver House building to much local fanfare by giving away free cheeseburgers to its first thousand customers.
A European throwback to colourful burger spots and diner culture of the past, Monzo feels like a feast for the senses with its pulsating club music vibes, fun cow-themed cartoon characters, and an approachable menu of well-made but family-friendly classic all-American menu items like cheeseburgers, fries or onion rings (made from beef fat), chicken strips, milkshakes, and hand pies.
The Wrangler (bacon double cheeseburger with BBQ sauce, aioli, charred onions, swiss cheese, and pickled jalapeños)
Monzo's fast food concept was explicitly inspired by the creative energy of influential Milanese "Paninari" youth subculture and movement from the 1980s, where Northern Italians became obsessed with the intersection of designer clothing, luxury lifestyle, and casual dining. It's an altogether strong contemporary blast from the past thanks to the glossy Italian cultural influences with some tasty burgers and plenty of style to spare.
