"I want you to get loose and weird."
False Creek—(December 7, 2018) Beloved rapper Childish Gambino (aka actor/filmmaker Donald Glover) finally brought his This Is America Tour—reportedly his last ever under this rap moniker—to Rogers Arena after previously rescheduling the final leg due to injury.
"If you bought a ticket tonight, you bought a ticket to the last Gambino tour."
This was the third time I've seen Glover perform as Childish Gambino from his early, very nerdy I Am Donald mixtape antics in an intimate club setting to his more polished Deep Web studio material at a small arena and now to the pure sex of his undeniable superstardom in a farewell of sorts.
Shirtless, sweaty, shaggy, and heavily bearded, Glover was sensationally smooth singing his array of new material and recent hits emphasizing his artistry.
He remarked how this wasn't a concert to be conventionally enjoyed but a church or place of worship with a performance that begged to be danced and moved to—instead of commodified through social sharing.
Full of glaring colourful lights and two sky-high video towers, the whole affair centred completely on Childish Gambino and his singularly groundbreaking creative talents expressed musically throughout the evening.
Despite the large, cavernous stadium setting, Glover as Gambino still effortlessly maintained his trademark raw, deeply visceral musical style with such a smooth showman energy.
♫ So dope like yeah
