chicken and waffles (with gravy, maple syrup, and green onions) Mount Pleasant—(September 22, 2018) The reopened
Rumpus Room that took over the old
Foundation location earlier this year with much of the same decor and welcoming appeal from owners
Rachel Zottenberg and David Duprey. Their funky weekend
brunch service is just in line with the rest of the homey eatery.
As one of the first Vancouver restaurants to popularize a more comfort food-focused menu including one earliest appearance of chicken and waffles before its now ubiquity, the kitchen if full of quirky edible delights.
breakfast waffle burger (with caramelized onion aioli, cheddar, sunny egg, and hash browns) Everything feels so personal including dish offerings that feel much more homemade than your typical weekend brunch fare.
buttermilk chicken bites (with BBQ, honey mustard, chili lime hot sauce, curry aioli, ranch, or raspberry aioli dip) Rumpus Room certainly has a theme with deep fried everything, lots of odd breakfast sandwich combinations, and eclectic sauces or garnishes throughout.
Fat Elvis (grilled peanut butter, bacon, and banana sandwich topped with Frosted Flakes) And yes, Rumpus' trademark grilled sandwich is just as offbeat in taste as described with the crisp bacon somehow perfectly balancing the sweet and savoury flavours just right with the cereal topping adding that extra sweet crunch to it.
ice cream float (with chocolate ice cream and root beer) Brunch at Rumpus is just as much a treat as the familiar atmosphere and strong brown and yellow tones evoking the style of an
East Vancouver basement and its good time vibes.
With its retro look and feel, its brunch and general appeal remains. It's no doubt nice to have it back.
deep fried pickles, sesame ginger fries, and Lil Cornies (Nathan's Famous hot dogs in cornbread batter) Eating brunch at Rumpus Room tactfully feels like dining on funky home recipes in your grandparents' house in every sense of that description.
