Granville—(April 4, 2018) Montreal electro pop outfit Young Galaxy performed live at Venue Nightclub to kick off their North American tour in support of their newly released sixth studio album—and first fully independent release—Down Time.
To start, five-piece Vancouver band Leisure Club casually wooed the crowd on this midweek night as guests trickled in. The local lineup of musicians played an upbeat yet measured performance full of buzzy indie pop songs.
Amidst a darkened, backlit room, the aloof but eclectic now husband-and-wife duo, Catherine McCandless and Stephen Ramsay, played their first live show in two years and first in Vancouver (where the band first formed) in nearly five—after the departure of bandmates Andrea Silver and Matt Shapiro then leaving Paper Bag Records—while appearing fully donned in matching black jumpsuits.
Described as a "meditation on the current climate of isolation, corruption, and despair", Down Time's songs moved Venue's intimate club setting with a spirited buzz while sparking melodic dancing on this evening.
Playing mostly new material only a couple days ahead of their album's release, it was a slimmed and stripped-down showcase of a newer Young Galaxy focused on emotional growth and independence with a renewed punk spirit.
The band reasserted their sound and trademark dreamlike minimalist pop vocals through ethereal musical waves that will certainly leave a stirring impression in my mind for a good while.
