Mount Pleasant—After a couple years of hustling in Vancouver's vibrant coffee scene, the folks behind Modus Coffee Roasting Co., owners Sharif and Jessica, finally opened a proper brick and mortar coffee shop on West Broadway late last year.
Long in development after refining their brewing talents through pop-ups and weekly events, there's a no-nonsense feel to Modus with a minimal menu of espresso drinks and rotating pour overs fronted by a streamlined open counter setup—previously occupied by an unsuccessful bubble tea shop and Italian deli.
Full of warm colours and clean wood tones/finishes, Modus takes a straightforward but very approachable feel to their beans and coffee making process.
It's hard to describe how much I enjoyed my initial drinks. For whatever reason and despite my love of both pour over filter coffees and steamed milk added to my Americano, it never occurred to me to combine those two previously separate things. Their delightful pour over misto immediately piqued my interest and was rather delicious and among the most appealing coffee drinks I've ever had.
The next day, I felt summoned to return and reacquaint myself with Modus' strong yet subtle coffee shop vibes. This time, I sample a classic latte and was also impressed by its fine precision and quality.
Modus has already raced to the top of my top cafes in the city for their precisely made coffees and quaint but cozy space slightly off the beat in one of my favourite neighbourhoods.
