Yaletown—(January 12, 2017) The fifteenth annual Dine Out Vancouver Festival is just around the corner with some of the 284 participating restaurants previewing their prix fixe menu items. On our Tourism Vancouver tour, we sampled La Pentola's three-course set meal (lunch $30 and dinner $40) inside the boutique Opus Hotel.
To start, the butternut squash salad (with poached, salted and roasted squash, frisse, balsamic, pickled onions, and whipped ricotta) and duck and radicchio salad (with confit duck leg, endive, frisse, grapes, pecans, pecorino, and aged balsamic) were decent starter choices full of fresh flavours.
For lunch, both the spaghetti all'Amatriciana (with smoked pork jowls, slow-cooked onions, chilies, tomatoes, and pecorino cheese) and squid ink taglierini (with side stripe shrimp, basil, saffron butter sauce, and herbed bread crumbs) were solidly satisfying pasta options to fill your gullet. The tasty spaghetti was suitable but safe as the taglierini was a bit more adventurous.
For the dinner mains, the well-cooked grilled hanger steak (with arugula, balsamic, pine nuts, and parmesan) was hearty and substantial. In contrast, the ling cod (with grilled baby squid, sea asparagus, fregola, celeriac purée, and pickled onion) was a nicer, lighter option from the sea.
For dessert, both the lemon cream (with a lavender biscotti and fresh berries) and flourless chocolate almond torte (with blackberry buttermilk sherbet)—a little understandably dry—were sweet efforts with myself leaning towards the creamier option.
La Pentola's Dine Out dishes are all quite pleasing and provide a suitable snapshot of their menu favourites with a nice mix options. It's a good opportunity to try them out for yourself. DOVF starts on Friday and runs until February 5th.
