Interview: Ovey Yeung Loves You Back.

"The things I want to do wouldn't have been possible without your support. Thank you."
#WeLoveOvey | Ovey Yeung Loves You Back | hit-and-run victim | Scars Are Beautiful

Life After Getting Hit By A Car. You probably know Ovey Yeung. I do. (Facebook tells me we have seventy mutual friends in common.) She's a popular person and a regular social butterfly. On August 4th, 2014, she was the victim of a serious hit-and-run car accident. What followed was a roller coaster ride of emotions for her friends and family that played out all over social media and in the local news.

Review: Losing 'Focus' – Will Smith Drops the Con

Will Smith Margot Robbie | Focus

The problem with con man films is the filmmakers behind them sometimes are unable to resist conning the audience along with its characters. Will Smith and Margot Robbie make for a very appealing pair of professional grifters and when they inevitably part ways, we struggle to figure out who is conning who. The ambiguously titled Focus is sly and fun, but writers/directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa choose too many divergent paths, trying both to entertain and fool you, proving their cleverness along the way.

Review: A Vampire's Life – 'What We Do in the Shadows'

Jemaine Clement Taika Waititi | What We Do in the Shadows

What We Do in the Shadows is a dryly hilarious, straightforward mockumentary that never breaks while skewering the loir around vampire mythology and iconography. Co-written, co-directed, and co-starring New Zealand comedians Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement (collaborators on the similarly excellent Flight of the Conchords HBO show), the film really invests in its fresh take on old characters to mine simple yet sophisticated comedy about its subjects so genuinely.

Review: 'Hot Tub Time Machine 2' Dries Out

Rob Corddry Craig Robinson Clark Duke Adam Scott | Hot Tub Time Machine 2

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is so stupid, it's almost endearing. Almost, but not quite. If the first Hot Tub Time Machine was an enjoyably dumb, but well-made enough, high concept meets low brow comedy riff on The Hangover style of comedies and work of 1980s pop nostalgia, then Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is a fairly lazy, dark, mean-spirited look at our future present.

Review: Colin Firth Kicks Ass – 'Kingsman: The Secret Service'

Colin Firth | Kingsman: The Secret Service

Loosely based on the comic book series by Mark Millar and from co-writer/director Matthew Vaughn (the team behind Kick-Ass), Kingsman: The Secret Service is a thoroughly entertaining, extremely violent, over the top riff on the James Bond spy genre. Colin Firth channels the swinging, camp charm of Roger Moore mixed with the deadening menace of today's comic book movies to execute all the worst parts of campy '60-70s era Bond films and the best parts of the Austin Powers franchise in an intense package surely to simultaneously delight and turn off viewers.

Review: A Killer Ryan Reynolds Hears 'The Voices'

"Take those drugs and you will enter a bleak and lonely world, Jerry."
Ryan Reynolds | The Voices

Persepolis creator/co-director Marjane Satrapi has made a comically dark and unsettling portrait of a serial killer and his mental health problems. In The Voices, actor Ryan Reynolds uses his inherently likeable charm and charisma to create a deeply troubling yet sympathetic portrayal of a well-meaning factory worker, Jerry Hickfang, who becomes severely unhinged. He tries to cope with his daily challenges while going off his medication and hearing his pet cat and dog manifest his own schizophrenic, dark voices  (with bizarre accents) telling him to commit murder.

From the Weekend: Bomber Brewing x Grandview-Woodland

Beerfest at Bomber Brewing's tasting room in Grandview-Woodland on January 31, 2015.

Bomber Brewing | Grandview-Woodland, Vancouver

I've been to Bomber Brewing many times (and drank their bottles even more times), but never quite felt like I had a total sum experience of their offerings until now. I love their kitschy, old school branding and strikingly designed cans of beer.
