Coffee break at Small Victory Bakery on Homer Street in Yaletown on November 27 and 28, 2014.
Yaletown is making a comeback. After only being open a couple of weeks for their soft launch, there's already some healthy positive buzz around the new Small Victory Bakery.
"Bread and coffee." As their slogan suggests, the hip, new cafe and bakery focuses on the freshest coffee and tasty baked good treats made with care and attention. Light breakfast and lunch options including breads, sandwiches, and the like are also available.
Small Victory inside is actually deceivingly spacious as it's more than easy to pass by without even knowing it's there as the cafe is very unassuming from the outside. Keeping with the whole theme of white, gold, and clean wood finishes, the coffee shop takes artistic and decorative influences from the similarly styled, upscale furniture retailers and art spaces in the neighbourhood.
As far as the pastries, I'm one for a good cinnamon roll (or bun) and this one was unsurprisingly comforting, crisp, and sweet for that mid-afternoon sugar fix. Everything about it was light and subtle including the cinnamon and frosting flavours. Not too shabby.
Milk and cream are dispensed via golden taps here. It's a nice touch in keeping with the "things organized neatly" vibe.
My usual caffeinated beverage of choice, an Americano, was notably very good. It was indeed well-brewed with a sharp, refreshing espresso taste. It's already up there for me in terms of one of the better ones in town.
What I like so far about SVB, is clearly how hard their working and trying. They're already very well staffed with a bunch of workers in their different areas, pouring over every detail.
Upon returning, instead of the more fancy, artisan type snacks, I snacked on a classic chocolate chip cookie and it was just fine. I am curious about the fancier, double-maked, gluten-free, etc. options though. Paired with my cookie, the nicely brewed espresso macchiato did not disappoint in its flavour.
While sitting and enjoying my coffee, I was asked by at least two different baristas how my coffee was. FYI, everything comes served on a wood boards.
Small Victory is already winning and a must try for caffeine addicts and pastry lovers in the area. It's promising to see where it already is. They officially open for regular service and hours starting today.
