Lunch at Sushi California on West Broadway in Mount Pleasant on July 26, 2014.
Sushi California's central location on Broadway, blocks away from Broadway-City Hall skytrain station is easily one of its most appealing factors. Don't get me wrong. The sushi is reliably satisfying, generally well-made, and predictable (in a good way). In many ways, it's a more convenient alternative to Burnaby's Sushi Garden.
The sushi eatery has their fair share of both standard dishes as well as cooky rolls and concoctions. The holla jalapeño roll was amusing and tasty but really didn't need the peppers, just as the smoked salmon asparagus roll (both very top) was pleasant yet slightly off.
As far as the rolls went, the standouts were the chopped scallop roll and trademark double crunchy spicy tuna roll in all their tasty glory. Both were solidly made and delicious to eat.
Another specialty, the spicy tuna sashimi was a feast for the eyes and full of spicy tuna flavour in its massive portion.
The sweet mango paradise was predictably sweet and savoury, while the spider roll was pretty good. It's hard to go wrong with Sushi California and its reliable dishes as a good and inexpensive option for Japanese.
