Harvest tasting menu tasting at Market by Jean-Georges restaurant inside the Shangri-La Hotel on Alberni Street on September 25, 2013.
To celebrate their new cuisine chef and management, Market welcomed media by serving their special Harvest tasting menu featuring locally sourced ingredients and paired with a few vintage wines. (Howitzer gun punch (bang, bang) with cranberries, above.)
To start, we had a tuna tartare flavoured with bonito crispy tapioca and avocado. It was delightfully tasty and light.
I found the Dungeness black pepper crab fritters (with Asian pear and endive) a tad offbeat but still filling. The crab consistency with pepper was a little contrasting fried together.
The pan seared sea bream (with corn chanterelles and silky carrot) was perfectly cooked, prepared, and seasoned. It was deliciously served.
For the carnivorous, the grilled lam chops (with mushroom bolognese and pecorino) was grilled just right. It's juiciness and flavour went down well. For dessert, our spiced rum toast (with apples, raisins, and brown butter ice cream) was a nice meal ender and not too sweet. The ice cream, in particular, was quite tasty. Paired with a Antica Distilleria Russo's Nocino walnut liqueur, the digestive wine was potent and powerful at about 40% proof.
Overall, I found the night's dinner quite satisfying. Each dish was complemented by the previous.
