ChineseBites signature dishes tour dinner #12 at Pearl Castle Café in Continental Centre on Sexsmith Road in Richmond on August 1, 2013.
This time around, ChineseBites ventured into the overwhelming smörgåsbord of Chinese dining in Richmond. We hit up Pearl Castle Cafe's flagship location to try some Taiwanese goodness. It's won the Chinese Restaurant Award for best Taiwanese bubble tea cafe four years in a row.
As for drinks, in order on the table were (top row, left to right) lavender milk tea, red bean slush, roasted rice latte, (middle row) pudding milk tea, Japanese green tea with red bean, sea salt coffee, (bottom row) mango milk tea, honey grass jelly lemon juice, and coconut red bean milk stea. I really liked the thick and creamy red bean slush as a great and filling dessert drink. The mango milk tea was subpar and syrupy as were the lavender and pudding.
I liked the chicken teriyaki fried rice as a safe, fairly standard dish.
My staple of Taiwanese beef noodles had some nice thick noodles. The tomato beef noodle (above) was a tastier and more appealing than the traditional house special beef noodle.
We tried a couple different chicken entrees. The chicken with garlic sauce (above) was definitely a winner over the chicken with three spices.
The Kung Pao shrimp was a hit with good flavour and spicy taste. It was a nice complement to the rice and noodle dishes.
It's surprising how much food and what a variety of dishes Pearl Castle offers. Although nothing stood out to me, everything tasted pretty fair. As far as Taiwanese cafes go, I generally stick with popular, more common dishes. The portions were big and I enjoyed how well everything was served.
