Summer chef's tasting menu at Milestones Crossroads Grill and Bar on Cambie Street in Fairview Slopes on July 22, 2013.
A bunch of us headed over to the Milestones Crossroads franchised eatery to sample their special new chef's menu for summer. The absolute highlight was the special wine pairings from Constellation Brand's finest vintages matched with each dish, including a crisp See Ya Later Ranch Unleashed Pinot Gris and sweet Inniskillin Okanagan Riesling Ice Wine.
I thought the crispy quinoa shrimp (with chimichurri aioli and vegetable slaw) had far too much quinoa and its crispiness took away any of the shrimp taste.
The panko blue crab cakes (with fennel and arugula salad and chipotle aioli) was fairly tasty and hearty but too packed in its flavour and filling. I was pretty satisfied after a single piece.
I was really disappointed by the spicy Thai basil stir fry (with rice noodles, shrimp, and coconut milk). To me, it tasted soggy and like a strange twist on Pad Thai without any taste or flavour.
However, the grilled Japanese tuna tataki (with asparagus and fennel slaw, Mandarin dressing) was pretty solid, flavourful, and grilled well.
The obvious stand out was the surf and turf of grilled flat iron steak and lobster fricassee and its rich flavour and nice presentation. The lobster bits mixed into the mashed potatoes were a nice touch. The meat was tender and satisfying in its comforting taste.
I enjoyed the interesting avocado and lime tart (with brown sugar Chantilly) for dessert but it's not for everyone. It was an intriguing twist on the tart with a unique taste.
I was mixed on the chef's menu as a whole. I like how Milestones is going for something different with some interesting culinary twists to their dishes. It just wasn't entirely appealing to me. I'd stick with any of the more substantive, meatier dishes. Their lamb sliders were actually a surprisingly tasty appetizer. This chef's menu (with new ones for each season) is available at your nearest Milestones location.
