Dinner menu tasting at Catch 122 Cafe Bistro on West Hastings in Gastown on July 23, 2013.
After missing their anniversary party, I settled in for a boisterous yet intimate and private tasting with a few colleagues to sample Catch 122's dinner menu and some of their specialty dishes.
I was charmed to learn their charcuterie and cheese plate featured a selection of in-house cured meat and some tasty artisan cheeses (all very good). I'd also recommend their Reuben sandwich (from their lunch menu) filled with tangy, meaty goodness in the form of corned beef and sauerkraut.
We tried a trio poutine platter with three different poutines: slow roasted pulled pork (with applewood smoked cheddar), ducketta (with confit duck leg, caramelized pearl onion, and brie), and the featured bison. All three provided a meaty, interesting option to the French-Canadian classic, topped with gooey cheese curds and gravy.
The stuffed zucchini blossoms consisted of fresh cheese curds, cherry tomato stuffed zucchini blossoms, pappardelle, legumes, and crème fraîche. It was quite refreshingly flavourful and a nice, light complement to the meat dishes.
I'd say the BC sablefish (with squid ink tortellini, sweet corn and tarragon, fumet, radish, and asparagus) was slightly average but still moist and flavourful.
I found the Heritage Angus flank steak (with red chimichurri, charred leek, zucchini, asparagus, pickled maitake, and pea shoots) well cooked and prepared as a tender, nice cut of beef.
Catch 122 has a warm, inviting decor with lots of handcrafted wood, brick, and a rustic interior giving a hip, cavernous feel. I always find the service and variety of dishes solid and reliably appealing. And P.S., the house made coffee hazelnut chocolate bar is absolutely delicious.
