UBC Chinese Varsity Club's 11th annual Supaskillz talent show competition at the Norman Rothstein Theatre on March 8, 2013.
I returned once again to CVC's annual talent competition as a judge (for a third consecutive year) with a dozen talented acts competing for a cash grand prize.
Opening act, Rap-G, starting off the night.
Last year's first place winner, freestyle beat box rap group Class Act, returned to win not only this year's people choice prize but also second place overall. Every year, this revolving act of musical misfits gets more polished, confident, and audacious with their improvised rhymes.
(One of the organizers, my cousin Angelica, and I, above.) First place went to singer/songwriter Ally Choo from Campbell River performing her own original songs (with shades of Kristie Yung). She charmed the audience with her raw performance and cool, breezy demeanour. Despite some unpolished yet endearing quirks, she showed her clear talents as a burgeoning musician with a soulful presence.
