ChineseBites signature dishes tour dinner #9 at Shanghai Élan Restaurant inside Crystal Mall in Burnaby on November 5, 2012.
It was time for something a little different with our Chinese dining crew as we went for some Shanghainese style food in Burnaby. Grace couldn't stop raving about the signature deep fried sweet and sour rock cod. It was very crispy and delicious.
The moo shu style pan fried pork wraps were fair and went down well but weren't anything too special. I felt the spicy sauce chicken was decent and saucy.
I thought the xiaolongbao pork soup dumplings were standard yet tasty with a fine consistency and flavour.
The ham and duck soup full of deep fried crispy wontons, taro, and pork was quite tasty and good despite resembling a vat of miscellaneous ingredients.
I love beef rolls and thought Élan's had a food texture and crisp shell. However, I wasn't a fan of the style of beef, a little more raw and chewy than fully cooked and fine. I do enjoy my carbs and the stir fried thick noodles (with shredded port and soy sauce) and similarly tasting fried rice cakes (below) did not disappoint.
In all, I was very satisfied with the meal and dishes on the whole despite some nitpicks. This ranks as easily one of the best ChineseBites dinners so far and a great option for Shanghainese food.
