ChineseBites signature dishes tour dinner #7 at Nong Chinese Restaurant (formerly The One Restaurant) on Granville Street in Shaughnessy on October 3, 2012.
We hit up another part of Vancouver for a full Chinese course dinner with the crew, this time on the westside.
We started off with some appetizers including chicken in chili sauce, jelly pork, marinated beef, all of which were satisfactory and fairly standard to our expectations.
I dug the lobster with bitter melon and shredded pork despite an over abundance of bitter melon. It had a nice flavour and a lot of seasoning.
We were surprised with some xiaolongbao soup pork dumplings near the end of the meal. They were pretty good with a nice skin and soup inside. I was unenthused by the vegetable salty pork rice. I found it overly salty and not for my taste.
Dishes came a rapid fire pace. The lamb with spicy cumin was okay but underwhelming. The standard assorted seafood stir fry with vegetables was solid. I was intrigued but disappointed by the dark braised pork belly.
Their specialty tea smoked duck was decent. I didn't really taste any hint of particular smokiness yet the meat was tender and good.
The giant dong po pork hock was ridiculously big. It was meaty and quite good. Some of these Chinese dinners are starting to run together. However, I did enjoy most of the dishes from Nong. The food was well prepared and everything was fairly satisfactory despite some lackluster feelings on my part.
