ChineseBites signature dishes tour dinner #5 at Grand Dynasty Seafood Restaurant at Grand Villa Casino Hotel in Burnaby on September 12, 2012.
After a short hiatus, our Chinese dining group made our way to Burnaby and the new casino to try some upscale fine dining.
You can see Sherman, Grace, newcomers Dave and Ann (from MePlusFood), and Diana snapping up food pictures.
To start, we sampled two kinds of signature pan fried prawns, one with an egg yolk sauce and another made with tomato. I preferred the spicy tomato sauce, however, both prawns were plump and fine tasting.
Next up was a unique boiled lobster in superior broth laid out for us before the ingredients were mixed and combined into the soup next to us. I thought it was rather interesting but still found it kind of bland and unimpressive.
The ling cod hot pot was tasty and a nicely prepared fish dish. The baked chicken stuffed with sea cucumber inside was a little salty and more show than substance.
The deep fried crispy chicken was probably the most appealing dish with a layer of sticky rice and batter skin fried onto a roasted chicken. It was definitely a neat Chinese twist on chicken and rice. The crackling rice put into a seafood broth (below, right) was fine enough but lacked a certain punch to it.
All in all, I found our dinner at Grand Dynasty very underwhelming. Nothing was bad, nor was it a negative experience at all, but just bland on the whole. None of their specialty or signature dishes particularly stood out. I'm curious about their more standard fare, however, I still thought it was a minor disappointment.
