The Artwork Hub launch featuring the work of Scott Sueme at The Network Hub in Gastown on May 2, 2011.
The Network Hub coworking space is not just a shared office space business but also friendly place for young entrepreneurs. Founders Minna Van and Jay Catalan decided to reach out to the Vancouver art community as well and use their place for a series of monthly art showcases.
Their first featured artist chosen was graffiti and letter artist Scott Sueme, who's based out of his studio in the Downtown Eastside. Scott, who went to Emily Carr, has a unique brand of graffiti inspired artwork that brings an odd classiness about it.
His abstract paintings are interesting and vibrantly colourful. His use of bold colours with an improvisational style bring out the layers of his art emphasizing his self-described, "subtle tones and textures to create a strong, energetic sense of movement".
While admiring the display, I caught up with some entrepreneurs and professionals like Vancity Buzz editors Karm Sumal and Crystal Kwon as well as Reach Magazine founder Dammy Og at a special preview of the space's inaugural showcase.
The space hosts a lot of cool events for young professionals for free in order to foster and develop a strong, supportive community. I admire that and they keep coming up with new ideas and ways to effectively use their workspace.
The media, friends and family preview of the ongoing art showcase was fun with buddies like Nicole Tai, Kathy Ko, copywriter Karra Barron, and The Network Hub-ers Minna, Jay, and Raul Pacheco-Vega. I think the casual wine, sushi, and cookies were nice touches. They have a lot of these mingling sessions for different topics, genres, and industries making for elegant ways to network and talk shop.
The highlight of the night, however, was "Baby Buzz" Nathaniel, who stole the show being absolutely adorable distracting us all from the artwork. Once the little tike left early, we all sat around discussing art, entrepreneurship, and sociability. It's a cool idea to spruce up the office space with nice art offering a free showcase for local talent.
The Network Hub is continuing their showcase with a new artist every month. They already have their first five lined up trying to bring attention to some fine young, up and coming talent.
So drop by and check out some cool local art. If you're more interested in their coworking space concept, you can catch my radio story on them for CBC News here or watch my BCIT television news story below.
