FaceBox Media photo booth fun at Unite for Japan fundraiser with Angela Jung, Peter, and Gio Levy on March 19, 2011.
FaceBox Media is Vancouver's latest entry into the photo both social service. However, there's a twist. FBM prides itself on its ridiculous attention to environmentalism. My UBC and CVC pals Martin Hui (brother of new Whitecaps FC singer Marie Hui) and Gerry Hernandez, principals in the company, bring a green vibe to their entrepreneurial venture.
Every part of the FaceBox is eco-friendly from the materials, energy, and transportation they use. They pride themselves on being responsibly sustainable.
Any non-green power or material they use, they give back in carbon offsetting or otherwise. For every hour of service booked, they plant a tree in B.C.
I love photo booth fun. Angela, Peter, Gio, and I had some fun being silly at the Unite for Japan fundraiser. It was fun but photo booths usually are.
On first thought, I struggle with the name. It conjures thoughts of an Eastern European Facebook knockoff and the lack of the words "photo" and "booth" in the company name irks me. I also think there mantra of environmentalism needs to be incorporated with the colour and word "green" somehow. However, this is neither here nor there.
Another marked difference between FBM and other booths like Pixelbooth (of which I am also fond of), besides the eco twist, is there open box-like structure.
Not a booth per se, the camera and computer top takes photos in an open space with a wicked light illuminating the photo-taking wall. The setup was wider out instead of the conventional close up shots.
The hand drawn cartoon cut out word balloons and props by VckyStxx were probably the best touch. This was a nice change from the usual basket of props.
I think the lack of a physical booth on the night brought up both good and bad parts. The openness and placement of the station was more social and inviting. However, some of the premise of a photo booth is intimate, silly fun. Nonetheless, it's a very social function that livens up any event.
FaceBox Media is off to a good start. The professionalism and impressive equipment operation setup are key.
It's a crowded market out there and FBM needs to continue to set themselves apart from the competition.
With a few more events and an expansion of their social presence, they should hit the ground running. I think I would play up the green aspect even more. Look for them at this month's The Buzz Entrepener Event.
