Christmas dinner at Kirin Restaurant at City Square Shopping Centre on Cambie Street on December 25, 2010.
On Christmas, my visiting cousins and I headed to a fancier Chinese restaurant for dinner. I was amused at all the white people dining around us. The joke of only Chinese places being opened on holidays came up a lot.
Everything was pretty good and solid.
There was nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary, but I enjoyed all the dishes.
The crab and fish maw soup was a tad bit bland, but still good.
I thought the seafood dishes were particularly good and well cooked.
The lobster in cream sauce was very tasty and there was lots of meat on our three pound sea creature.
I liked how everything was presented in a prim and proper fashion with East meets West aesthetics.
The squab (domestic pigeon) was very meaty and had a intriguing texture and taste.
My favourite dish, Peking duck, was excellent. I love the duck skin and hoisin sauce taste wrapped in a soft shell.
The sweet and sour pork was pretty standard yet filling. The lettuce and duck meat wraps were great and enjoyable.
One thing I did not care for was the manager hovering of us as we paid via credit card even going as far to point out the tipping function and asking rhetorically, "How much would you like to tip?" and watching. That was kind of rude. He did, however, turn away when entering the PIN code.
My family was very satisfied with our Christmas Day meal at Kirin. At just under $400 including tax and tip for nine of us to dine on an upscale Chinese food dining experience. It was a solid dinner as I enjoyed the deft touches to the meal, making for a fancier Chinese food outing.
