The Waldorf Hotel's grand opening Halloween party on East Hastings in Grandview-Woodland on October 30, 2010.
My friends and I arrived early to the Waldorf because we knew the place was going to be packed due to the 4200 attending and 1900 maybe RSVPs on Facebook, the constant ads on The Peak, the full on feature in the Vancouver Sun, and the many posters plastered downtown advertising the free event.
Fortunately, I was confident the large hipster contingent would not arrive anytime before 10 o' clock.
We arrived at about 6:30 soon after the opening and there was a decent line already. After 25 minutes, we got in and explored the tiki bar style building with ease as it was still pretty sparse for such a big place. The spaces are really cool with like five or so separate bar, lounge, cafe, and dining areas.
I was very impressed by all the wonderfully creative costumes. I was, however, annoyed at the other 4 guys dressed as Clark Kent with a Superman crest underneath their shirts. Hands down, the most popular costume of the evening was the blue Na'vi alien look from Avatar.
The place had something for everyone. There was a packed dance floor with DJ stylings, an open slide show area, a casual cafe space, and a really cool bar/lounge space.
There were plenty of bars everywhere. There was even a small salon and makeup space. I absolutely love the tiki theme throughout the place. It found it imminently charming. Throughout the night, more and more people packed the place. There was a really cool vibe going with an interesting mix of people of various ages.
All in all, the night was a blast. My friends and I were pretty beat by the time we left just before 11 as we had been there before 7. I definitely look forward to coming back and enjoying all the fun possibilities the historic Waldorf Hotel holds with its copious amount of hanging out space.
