The University of British Columbia will receive $2.17 million from HSBC Bank Canada over the next seven years to provide free educational resources to Downtown Eastside residents.
HSBC’s donation will continue the UBC Learning Exchange’s community service learning program and their organization of 400 student volunteers acting as tutors, role models and mentors in inner-city schools. The program expects to impact ten thousand local children and youth by promoting literacy, math, and science.
The donation will continue to fund local computer skills workshops and ESL conversation programs for low-income immigrants. UBC Learning Exchange associate director Kathleen Leahy says she is delighted the donation will expand their work promoting social sustainability and responsibility through education in the Downtown Eastside.
