GENRE | 'Sausage Party' – A Godless Food Fight

Seth Rogen | Sausage Party

Sausage Party is a filthy, CGI animated sex comedy taking the whole Toy Story alive concept (mixed with a Finding Nemo separation story and the self-awareness of The Lego Movie) to ridiculous lengths. Producers/co-writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have spearheaded a truly dirty film about racial stereotypes, religious philosophy, and the basic tenants of humanity using talking food and household products.

The film really riffs on common human practices and beliefs while it skewers the contemporary culture we live in complete with violent, hyper sexual, and perverse references. Co-directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon and co-written by Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, Sausage Party tells a familiar tale in a very unfamiliar fashion using the Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks formulas to express some very topical political issues in the most vulgar of ways.

The ensemble voice cast is a murderer's row of hilarious comedians starring Rogen and Kristen Wiig as hot dog and bun lovebirds, Frank and Brenda, while Michael Cera and Nick Kroll co-star as the innocent sidekick Barry and evil douche (literally) villain. Jonah HillBill HaderJames FrancoDanny McBrideCraig RobinsonPaul Rudd, Salma Hayek, and Edward Norton as Sammy Bagel, Jr .(doing his best bad Woody Allen impression) also lend their voices. Kroll is particularly good as an over the top, stereotypical, bro-y type douchebag truly flexing his vocal skills.

Sausage Party is dumb, fun, and heartening like most Rogen/Goldberg projects with enough smart commentary and thoughtful jokes to complement the truly outrageous, dirty adult humour. The crude but effective animation (think VeggieTales) tells the rudimentary but fun adventure story well as it bluntly delivers a message of godlessness.
