Express lunch tasting at Market by Jean-Georges restaurant inside the Shangri-La Hotel on Alberni Street on October 29, 2014.
Market by Jean-Georges is looking to bring the dining experience back to lunch and downtown's busy workers. Their new "express" lunch service aims to give diners a satisfying meal in a reasonable amount of time (they say within thirty minutes) with their 3-course set menu (2-course if you want to skip dessert), so you can get back to the office.
To start, the consensus and recommended appetizer was the Steelhead sashimi (with garlic, chill, and sesame dressing) and it did not disappoint with its fresh, simple fish taste well-paired with the garnish flavours. For salads, a carrot avocado and standard Cobb are also available.
For the main, I deviated from the meatier choices and went Italian with the gnocchi (with tomato sauce, parmesan, and basil). It had a delightfully precise taste with the tomato sauce complementing the cheese and pasta quite well.
The pan-seared ling cod (with sunchokes, lobster mushroom, and lobster broth) was the favourite at the table as the default signature lunch dish. It was well-cooked piece of fish with its supplementary seafood flavours. The third option of the grilled pork loin looked good too in all its meaty goodness.
The Market cheesecake (with Riesling gelée, poached figs, and grape sorbet) was predictably tasty and smooth, full of sweet flavours capping off the meal. The banana cream pie looked pleasing as well (a simple sorbet or ice cream are also available).
Market's not reinventing the weekday lunch experience but offers a satisfying array of dishes in a nice, quick package (available now) in keeping with Market's usual dining service.
