A Midsummer Night dinner preview tasting at Campagnolo Italian restaurant on Main Street in Strathcona on July 16, 2014.
A special family style supper club edition of Campagnolo’s Market Wednesdays dinner happens August 6th. Featuring a special menu inspired and made from fresh ingredients and produce from the Vancouver Farmers Markets at Main Street Station just down the block, the feast is paired with wines from Masi. (Camp Upstairs bar manager Peter Van de Reep making cocktails, above.)
For starters, the Albacore tuna crudo (with watermelon, lime, and spearmint) was interestingly refreshing with a strong minty flavour.
I thoroughly enjoyed the simple yet delectable fresh spaghetti (with marinated tomatoes and grana padano) and its clean, basic taste.
The undoubted highlight was the very crispy fried chicken and its moist tenderness. Other meaty dishes included the smoked/roasted Hawkshaw Sockeye salmon and grilled beef shoulder, both standing in the shadow on their poultry sibling dish.
The zucchini risotto (with pecorino and basil) was a big hit with all its creamy, cheesiness and crunchy toppings.
From the market, the grilled patty pan squash (with hazelnut soffritto) and warba nugget potatoes (with mint) were quite tasty. For desert, the lapin cherry crostata (with mascarpone and honey) was delicious with its crispy, fruity tartness.
It was a pretty dynamite meal and a worthy feast full of fresh ingredients and diverse dishes. Obviously and FYI, the dinner menu on the night will not be exactly the same as seen here and depend on the day's available produce and chef's inspiration. Bon appétit!
