UBC Chinese Varsity Club's 9th annual Supaskillz talent show competition at the Norman Rothstein Theatre on February 5, 2011.
I had the honour of being a judge at CVC's annual talent show. The competition was fierce.
The night was aptly hosted by Jeffrey Chiu and Anna Yee.
There were so many different, exciting acts ranging from magic, dance, singing, freestyle rap to a cappella including the UBC Thunderbird Dance Team (TDT) shown above. The show was kicked off by a rousing magic and illusionist act from Pauline Kong.
Singer Frankie Cena swooned us with his sultry voice.
My favourite act was probably Class Act, an awesome freestyle and beatbox rap trio that wowed us with their non-assuming, quick rhymes and delivery.
Gio Levy placed second with a rousing song and guitar performance.
My fellow judges and I had a very difficult time ranking and deciding what acts were the best, because of all the talent displayed. It was very hard to compare such different forms of performance as well.
The Rachel Thom Band came from Whistler to perform their bundle of original songs.
Natasha Jung, Jonathan Yee, and Tyler Lee won the people's choice prize with their inventive cover renditions of popular songs.
I really enjoyed Amie Yoshitake and Carlo Enage's crazy rendition of Gorillaz's "Feel Good Inc.", especially Carlo's maniacal cackle.
The X Guys were a crowd favourite with their a cappella stylings acting as a great show ender.
The UBC Unlimited dance crew dazzling us with their wicked choreography winning second runner up.
Congratulations to the grand prize winners Fred Nguyen and Michael Yap for their amazing Celtic dance that mesmerized the crowd. They received $500 and a trip to California.
The CVC events department, especially department head Joanna Yang, did a great job organizing and executing the event. The show was seamless and featured a variety of performance acts well spaced throughout the evening.
