2010 Music Waste Festival: Petroleum By-Product with Soft Focus, Fine Mist, Cosmetics at The Cobalt on June 4, 2010.
The Friday night show at The Cobalt, the renovated ashes of the old Cobalt, was a blast.
I got to the bar as Soft Focus was midway into their set, which ended with the band members throwing drinks at each other before hugging on stage. Their energy made up for the wild performance.
Fine Mist got the crowd going with their upbeat rock and personable stage presence which set a good tone for the night.
The value for a $5 ticket to a Music Waste show (or a $15 all access pass) is bar none. I saw four very solid acts for the price of a pint of beer.
Cosmetics, the electronic duo, provided a cool vibe to the darkened room. They had a unique setup and sound even when their keyboards cut out.
I have said enough about Petroleum By-Product already. They closed the night off with a vibrant, fluid set that included a smoke machine, capping an eclectic evening of quality live music.
I hope the Music Waste festival sticks around Vancouver for a long time.
It is an absolutely great and inexpensive way to discover a lot of emerging, new music acts.
